Here at the Escort Scotland blog we have kept you up to date with the Rolf Harris case. As we all know, Rolf was convicted of 12 sexual offences and jailed for five years and nine months. Well, today there was an update on the case.
The Attorney General has decided that, despite 150 complaints that the sentence was too lenient, he will not be appealing the length of time Harris will be spending in prison.
‘Not Likely To Increase’
Jeremy Wright would not refer the sentence to the Court of Appeal as “he did not think they would find it to be unduly lenient and increase it”.
“The sentencing judge was bound by the maximum sentence in force at the time of the offending,” it added.
“The judge made some of the sentences consecutive to reach the total sentence, but he could not simply add up sentences on individual counts; the overall sentence had to be just and proportionate to the overall offending.”
He also stated that the age of Mr Harris would have to have been taken into consideration.
Harris, 84, was prosecuted in line with legislation in force during the period his offences were committed. At that time, the maximum sentence for indecent assault was two years in prison, or five years for offences committed against victims under 13.
Now what they are saying is that you can’t use modern sentencing guidelines to sting someone in a worse manner than would have happened if they had been caught at the time of the offences taking place.
Whether that is morally right or not (and I’m sure people will have their own opinions) that is the law, so it is of no real surprise this decision was taken.
Further Allegations
However, it might not be all over for Rolf Harris. The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it has received “a number of allegations” about Harris since his conviction.
A spokesman said these further allegations were being considered and action may be taken.
