Young American sports stars have been getting a bad press recently. The most notable case was the awful rape incident involving Brock Turner, the 20 year old swimmer from Stanford University. Of course, every rape is awful, but what set this aside was the fact that he only got sentenced to six months in jail, and a huge portion of American society seemed to be more concerned that one of ‘their boys’ had to pay a price for a ‘mistake’.
It doesn’t stop there. You have major NFL (American Football, you know, the one where they throw it?) players getting busted for domestic abuse. People like Johnny Manziel, once the hottest young sportsman in the land, are now more famous for ‘their off the field issues’.
This has all played into the idea that young U.S sports stars are self entitled assholes, who treat the world around them, especially women, as commodities who are there to please them.
Well, we have a good news story which shows that even if there is an element of truth to the stereotype, there are some really good eggs out there.
An Unpleasant Incident
An American Football player for the University of Florida stopped a woman being allegedly raped when he was working security at the 101 Cantina bar in Gainesville, US.
Christian Garcia was taking out the trash in the early hours of the morning when he saw a 19-year-old woman “pinned up against a dumpster” which suggested to him she was unconscious.
Despite the guy who was with her saying that she was his girlfriend, her condition heavily implied that the sexual activity was happening without her consent.
He said the man had his mates standing around, and they appeared to be watching the sexual assault take place.
Garcia told abcnews: “Nobody deserves this to happen to them.”
Well, at this point Garcia, and his co-worker Leroyea Simmons, made the decision to get involved – Simmons filming what was happening while Garcia broke up the activity.
As he grabbed the man “by the shoulders” Garcia said he began “to get violent” and was throwing punches before he slipped over and “busted his face on the floor.”
OK, I have never seen the video, but I do wonder of it was like when you start getting mouthy with the police after you have had a few drinks, and you ‘mysteriously’ bang you head on the wall whilst you are falling over? A quick note to the potential rapist; don’t start throwing hooks at a University standard linebacker…it is bad for your health.
Garcia added: “The attention has been cool, but a horrible act happened that night.”
Police spokesman Ben Tobias confirmed that Garcia and Simmons had indeed helped to stop the alleged sexual assault.
They identified the suspect, Christopher Shaw, in a photo line-up.
Shaw, 34, was charged with sexual battery. Although no formal plea has been entered, according to the arrest report, Shaw denied the allegation.
Wrong To Stereotype
Now I am not here to talk about the merits of the allegation. The courts will do that, and what will be will be. However, it is good to see that not every young male American sports star is a rampant misogynist. Mr Garcia has proven that there are some really good eggs out there.
At a time when it seems ‘cool’ to post negative comments about this group of people, it only seems fair that we bring this positive one to you.
There truly is hope, people.

Anybody who prevents rape in my eyes are heroes.
I have no idea how anybody can rape, they much be sick and twisted in their minds to do so and they deserve to be locked up for a very long time.
Good man, I would do the same.
Anybody caught raping should be castrated.
